Famous Spanierds Vol: II Juan Sebastian Elcano first man to circumnavigate the world

Hello all and I had a wonderful convosation today with a man who said he was related to a famous spanish explorer and he told me about this famous explorer called Juan Sebastian Elcano.

This man was a 15th century Spanish explorer from the Basque country. When the famous captain of the Victoria died (aka Magellan) this brave men rallied his crew and took control of the ship and said from the Guinean islands to Spain.

Before this great feat he faught in the Italian wars wheir he fought under the famous Commander Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba.

After fighting for a foreign country he retured home to Spain to own and run his own ship, but unfortunitly he broke spanish laws by giving his ship to genoan bankers to clear his debt. To fix this problem he went to his king (aka king Charles the 5th) to ask for a pardon which he recieved if he became a subordinate officer to the man he eventually replaced.

A few months into the voyage he was apart of the mutiny agaisnt Magellan , but luckily he was spared and made to do 5 months of hard labour after which he became a captain of a galleon Santiago. A ship that went down in a storm later in the voyage.

A few months later what remained of the fleet arrived in the philipines wheir the spanierds and the islands natives to Christianity and participated in what would be known as the battle of Mactan agaisnt other tribes that where on the island.

the survivors continued on and after going around south america they returned and Juan was honoured with a coat of arms by Charles V of Spain, featuring a globe with the motto: Primus circumdedisti me (in Latin, "You went around me first"), and an annual pension.

I hope you enjoy this post i want to thank Sr Elcano for telling me about this great man.
