Hello ladies and gents this is the latest poem from the Broken Butterfly

You May Be My Father but You’ll Never Be My Dad

When you have a baby it’s the greatest day of your life right?
You watch her grow up and you promise to protect her.
Be there for her.
Be her best friend.
Put her needs before yours.
Simple enough right?
But you didn’t do that.
You may be my father but you’ll never be my dad.

A dad doesn’t make you feel worthless or a burden.
A dad doesn’t yell at you because you ask for help.
A dad doesn’t play his game for hours and forgets to feed you.
A dad doesn’t tell you that he is cheating on your mom.
A dad doesn’t abandon you.
But you did.

I spent years defending you because you had me in your trap.
I believed in you lies because I was so afraid of admitting that you were a monster.
And I still spend nights curl up under the covers hoping that you won’t come for revenge.
You may be my father but you’ll never be my dad.

you are the reason why I don’t think any man will love me.
You are the reason why I say sorry for everything.
You are the reason why I have trust issues.

I don’t want to be like you.
Every time I look in a mirror I’m reminded of you.
You may be my father but you’ll never be my dad..
You want me to feel guilty about you.
But you don’t have the right of my love.
Your scars are deep in me and not easily forgotten.
You can’t expect me to forgive you for everything that you burned into me.
I won’t.

I am finally standing up for myself,
and you can’t guilt trip me.
You have to earn to be in my life.
It’s not your right.
Because you may be my father but you’ll never be my dad.
