Hello ladies and gents this is the Viking telling you that today we are talking about
Great Union Day 2020
Today’s Doodle honors Romania’s Great Union Day, or Ziua Marii Uniri, in commemoration of the unification of Transylvania, Banat, CriČ™ana, and MaramureČ™ with the Romanian Kingdom on this date in 1918. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the selection of this date for the country’s national holiday, which occured in 1990.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork is the blue, yellow, and red tricolor flag of Romania. The flag’s colors trace back to the Ottoman principalities of Moldavia and Walachia that joined to form Romania in 1858. Both principalities flew flags derived from ancient banners–Moldavia’s flag was blue and featured an ox head, while Walachia’s was yellow with an eagle. Walachia also used a naval ensign that featured all three of the colors flown throughout the country today. The first version of the modern Romanian flag appeared in 1848, and following various iterations the nation officially adopted the current design in 1989.
Happy Great Union Day, Romania and as always have a chilled day from the Viking
