Hello ladies and gents this is the Viking telling you that today we are talking about
Breathtaking Must-Visit Attractions in Crete
Some travellers might prefer to plan a holiday in meticulous detail, while others would rather go with the flow and decide what to do on the spot. Whichever you are, these places absolutely have to be on your list when visiting this Greek island.
SamariĆ” Gorge
The SamariĆ” Gorge, the longest in Europe, is an exhilarating visit. The trail covers 18km (11.1mi) of spectacular landscape and scenery. You may even catch a glimpse of one or two endemic animal species such as the Cretan badger or the spiny mouse. And while it may be a bit strenuous to complete this hike during the warm summer months, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over the Libyan Sea at the end of your journey.
Knossos Minoan Palace
Located about five kilometres (3.1mi) from Iraklio, Knossos is considered Europe’s oldest city, and its Minoan Palace is a must-see. Discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos, Knossos was once a ceremonial and political hub of Minoan civilisation and culture. The palace featured over 1,200 rooms, with some of them reconstructed to portray the grandeur of the site. In 1700 BCE, an earthquake destroyed the first palace – built sometime around 2000 BCE. Constructed in its place was an even greater palace, but evidence shows that it was destroyed in 1450 BCE, possibly by the Santorini eruption, the same one that ruined the ancient city of Akrotiri.
ELAFONISSI
Elafonissi is a real slice of paradise. Located approximately 70km (43.4mi) from Chania, Elafonissi is a Natura 2000 Protection Program-listed area blessed with natural beauty, clear shallow waters and fine sand beaches. In some places, the sand looks pink, taking its unusual colour from the thousands of crushed shells. Spend the day sunbathing or exploring the hidden coves.
and as always have a chilled day from the Viking
