The Size Of The Island:

North Sentinel Island is about 59.6 km2 and you can compare its size with the size of Manhattan Island in New York.

Though North Sentinel Island is a part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and locates near the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, it does not keep any contact with India. And the North Sentinel Island people also have no idea about the world that is outside their island what so ever.


They Are Endangered:

Some sources say that in the 18th centuries when the British tried to colonize this island, there were about 8,000 people that lived on this island. But currently, the number is drastically low and there are about only 50 to 150 tribes that are alive today.


You Are Not Allowed To Visit The Island?

No, visitors from around the world are not supposed to visit this island. The Indian government has put a ban on everyone from visiting this island. The North Sentinel Island people are not immune to the modern diseases that are known to mankind. And these poor people are not vaccinated and catch these deadly diseases very easily. As tribes are a heritage for any country, it is a safety measure to protect them from the rest of the world so that they can live. A Three-mile buffer zone is enforced around the island by the Indian Navy.

They Are Believed To Stay Here for More Than 60,000 Years:


According to a BBC report, The North Sentinel Island people are descendants of a man who might have left Africa and had reached here through the Indonesian side and lived his life on this island in isolation about 60,000 years ago. From him, the Sentinelese tribe descended.
