FUN FACTS ABOUT WATER POLO
• The average water polo player swims 1,600 meters in a game (28 minutes).
• Water polo is among one of the fastest growing high school sports in America. It
ranks sixth for boys and fifth for girls according the National Federation of High
Schools.
• Women's USA Water Polo has been the top 3 in Olympics since 2000.
• Athletes from the ages of 14 to 45 have competed in Olympic Water Polo so far.
• Blake Dunson was the first ever SwimRVA Water Polo player to get a
scholarship to play in college. Hopefully the first of many!
• The first organized activity considered to be water polo can be traced back to
1877 in Scotland where swimming teacher William Wilson created rules for a
game called “aquatic football.” Today, he is generally credited as the founder of
water polo
