Hello this is Octo Lou and we are talking about
OCTOPUS
The octopus is one the earth's most bizarre and fascinating creatures to come across! Known in the scientific world as Octopoda, these funny looking sea animals have 300 species! They are in a group called Cephalopoda with squids, cuttlefish, nautiloids and snails. They all came from a mollusc resembling the Monoplacophora in the Cambrian some 530 million years ago.
HOWEVER the octopus DNA shows a mutation that the others don’t. Scientists believe maybe from an asteroid something from that mixed with its ancestors creating the octopus. Meaning then octopus is part space creature!
Though commonly known as this sea creature has 8 tentacles this is only partly right. The females have 8 but the males have 7 as one is technically its genitalia. Mating can be difficult for them as the females are larger and can use their powerful beaks to harm or even eat the males. So the males have found a way to avoid this, they will rip their genitalia off and throw it at the females so they can swim away. The female can still breed. Don’t worry though! Like many animals, octopuses can regenerate their limbs back!
They have one of the smartest brains in the animal kingdom! They can figure out puzzles, games and some can even count and read!
Ranging from the 1 inch Star-Sucker Pygmy to a massive giant Pacific octopus going up to 30 feet long!! Commonly known as the Giant Red octopus! They have 3 hearts and no bones! Only thing hard in their body is a beak for a mouth that can break the toughest crab shell! That a simple law with them is “if their beaks fit them they will get through it.”
Some have developed some amazing tricks to avoid predators like the puffer fish or dolphins. Some can change colors like The Mimic Octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) that has learnt to mimic other creatures and plants that when it changes color it looks like a seasnake or seaweed.
Some have developed poison Blue-ringed octopuses produce a potent neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin, a potentially-deadly substance also found in pufferfish. It is beautiful but very very deadly to all animals and us
And as always have a chilled day from the Viking
