GRIZZLY BEARS

Grizzly bears or North American brown bears are one of the most iconic bears there are along with the polar bear and pandas. Its scientific name is Ursus arctos horribilis. Though there are grizzly bear in Korea and Russia known as Black Grizzly bears these has no relation to the North American Grizzly bear.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark first described it as grisly, which could be interpreted as either "grizzly" (i.e., "grizzled"—that is, with grey-tipped hair) or "grisly" ("fear-inspiring", now usually "gruesome"). The modern spelling supposes the former meaning; even so, naturalist George Ord formally classified it in 1815 as U. horribilis for its character.

Brown bears originated in Eurasia and travelled to North America approximately 50,000 years ago, spreading into the contiguous United States about 13,000 years ago.

Coastal grizzlies, often referred to by the popular but geographically redundant synonym of "brown bear" or "Alaskan brown bear" are larger and darker than inland grizzlies, which is why they, too, were considered a different species from grizzlies. Grizzly bears are some of the largest subspecies of brown bear, weighing up to 858 lb for males and 465 lb for females. Newborns weigh about 18 oz.

They can stand on their hind legs reaching up to 7 feet tall and slam down their weight with ease on their front legs. They can bite with 923 PSI, enough to break a bowling ball.

However, though looking scary, the majority of Grizzly will stray from humans as they are extremely cautious but naturally curious and like to play and investigate things. Don’t get it wrong, a playful light tap from these massive mammals can rip your hand off and a curious nibble can cause some serious damage.

So don’t be inviting these fellas to your picnic.

Only 3 things are known to why these cautious animal's attack: you have food, and they are deprived and desperate in their hunt for food through the summer, matting. Males become filled with testosterone for females and being near a male in matting times will end badly, and lastly. Cubs. A mother bear is known as one of nature's most protective creatures and accidentally coming in between cubs and their mother will only end in death and a mama bear will kill all threats to her cubs.

Around 60,000 wild grizzly bears are located throughout North America, 30,000 of which are found in Alaska. and up to 29,000 live in Canada. On July 28, 1975, the grizzly was listed in the US Federal Register as endangered. On August 1st, 2017, the bears were delisted by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and management was turned over to the states.

In Yellowstone grizzly bears are protected as you can’t hunt there but outside of that, other places have hunting seasons though it is HIGHLY frowned on.

In most of the lower 48 states, grizzlies are considered a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Grizzly bears are legally hunted in the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Alaska. The government of British Columbia banned the hunting of Grizzly Bears in 2017, as it did not align with their values.

But with help with reserves and breeding programs Grizzly bears are now found wild only in Canada and Alaska and in parks and reserves in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Washington.

And as always thank you for reading
