TIME PIECES

Hello ladies and gents this is the Viking telling you that today we are talking about

Rolex Submariner

1. The Submariner model went into production in 1953

2. The first Rolex Submariner was introduced to the public in 1954

It was released at the Basel Watch Fair.

3. The Rolex Submariner is part of Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual line

While it is its own model, the Rolex Submariner falls under the Oyster Perpetual line.

Rolex has essentially expanded its Oyster Perpetual range by introducing many of its watches with a second name. eg. Oyster Perpetual Submariner. The reason is that the case on the watches in the Oyster Perpetual range has a similar shape. The Oyster was the first waterproof watch Rolex made, and after that, all waterproof watches by Rolex had the name Oyster. Furthermore, Perpetual merely means that the movement is self-winding.

4. The Rolex is one of the most iconic wristwatches in the world

The Rolex Submariner is instantly and distinctively recognized by its design and shape. When many people see a Rolex Submariner, even if they don’t have much knowledge of watches, they can recognize the Rolex Submariner. The Rolex Submariner has gone to history as one of the most iconic and important watches in history, and you may even say that the Submariner has set the standards for how a diver watch should look.

5. The case reference number of the first Submariner was either 6204 or 6205

It is unclear which model came first – nevertheless, the models are almost identical and have minimal differences.

6. The first Submariners didn’t have ”Mercedes’ hands”

Today, the Rolex Submariner is known for its distinctive hour hand, which is referred to as a ”Mercedes hand”. The first Submariners did, however, not have it.

7. Few of the 6205 watches carried the name Submariner on the dial

It’s unclear if any 6205 of the first versions of the Submariner carried the name on the dial. This would come to roll out more broadly later on.

8. It is believed that there were unexpected trademark issues connected with the name “Submariner”

When Rolex released the 6204 and 5205, some watches of the 6204 had the Submariner logo printed below the center pinion At the same time, others have the Submariner logo completely blacked out.

9. Rolex produced a small number of 6200 Submariners

The Submariner 6200 was the first timepiece in the Submariner range that would carry the ”Mercedes hands”. The 6200 Submariner was released in 1954.

10. The Submariner 5512 and 5513 were the first to use an oversized crown

After Rolex released the two Submariner models 5512 and 5513, they were the first to use an oversized crown, and they did so to make it easier for drivers to adjust the watch with gloves on. After all, the Submariner is a diver’s watch. After the use of an oversized crown on these two models, they became a standard feature of the Submariner line.

And as always have a chilled day from the Viking
