Egyptians Were the First One to Use Fashion Dog Collars


If you look back, the very first instance of using dog collars as an ornament will be seen during the predynastic era in Egypt. At that time, people were against restraining an animal and they were treated as companions whose necks were decorated with dog collars made from leather and precious metals. 



Dog Collars Once Served as a Protection from Wolves


In ancient Greece, dogs were used for herding, which used to be on the radar of predators and wolves. At that time, dogs were made to wear collars having large metal spikes. These metal spikes radiated away from the neck that intimidated and scared wolves and other predators and prevented them from biting the dog’s neck. This way, it helped protect the dogs. 


Padlocked Collars Were a Sign of Wealth and Power Once 


During the Middle Ages, the time until Rabies tags or identification on collars came, owners proved ownership of their pets. They used to place a large padlock on the dog collar and kept the key with them only. The collars used at that time were usually decorated with embellishments and were ornate. Owing to this feature, these dog collars were considered a sign of wealth and power.


Collars and Licensing Emerged during the Renaissance


As the wealth was evenly distributed during the Renaissance, people started keeping pets and that’s when dog collars and licenses were used on a large scale. The Collars used were made from a simple piece of leather to encircle the neck. These collars had either a metal ring for a leash attachment or nameplate. It was used to license nuisance dogs and any dog that didn’t carry the collar was immediately disposed of by the authorities.

During the Renaissance in Europe, dogs were made to wear collars positioned outward to attract wolves. Also, it offered protection to the dog, which was used as bait because the prongs kept the wolves from biting the dog.
